Press release for the CIMA South West England and South Wales Charities Focus Group workshops I’ve been organising and which will run through 2014 – 2015
Charity finance professionals will meet for a workshop on Monday (22 Sept) to understand how better to work with the charity sector, at an event organised by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Held at Future Inns’ Cabot Circus Hotel, the workshop will educate accountants on how to make the most of paid and voluntary charity roles by boosting their knowledge of charity accounting training. Finance professionals from the charity sector, or anyone interested in developing charity accounting knowledge is welcome to attend.
Delivered as an informal and interactive seminar, participants will deepen their understanding of charities’ organisational and financial structure, in addition to providing networking opportunities with peers. David Johnson, ACMA, CGMA, CIMA South West Area Chair, says: “The charity sector is growing rapidly but it is complex and requires specialist understanding and many charities struggle to afford qualified and experienced charity accountants. It also suffers as some people are even put off getting involved in the charity sector by the special charity regulations. But there are great opportunities for accountants in the charity sector, such as the chance to gain board experience. This workshop aims to help finance professional in Bristol identify and develop these opportunities.”
Bevan Buckland Chartered Accountants will provide a theoretical grounding of charity accounting and real-life experiences, while The Cranfield Trust, which provides charities with skilled business volunteers will also speak at the event. Both speakers will participate in an “open panel” session afterwards to encourage participation.
This is one of a series of workshops on “charity accounting” being held in Bristol to help equip local management accountants throughout the South West and South Wales with skills needed to work within the charity sector. CIMA has set up a LinkedIn “CIMA Charities” forum as a networking and information arena.
The workshop will take place between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm. Lunch and refreshments shall be provided. Tickets cost £50 for CIMA members, £40 for CIMA students, and £60 for others. More information is available on the CIMA website about the forthcoming workshops: Workshop 3 – Charity Accounting made clear; Workshop 4 – Fundraising and Taxation; Workshop 5 – Strategic financial management – risks and reserves.
